About the estate:
The Cazes family now owns this cru, which originated as a division of Château Batailley. The vineyards are easily recognizable by the picturesque tower known as the “Aspic,” which stands in the middle of them, and by the wine-red color of the winery. Under the Borie family, the estate produced an elegant and relatively supple Pauillac; it now appears to have gained in body and intensity without losing any of its finesse.

About the estate:
A new chapter is about to begin for this estate, which was long managed under a lease agreement by François-Xavier Borie (Grand-Puy-Lacoste) and was sold to the Cazes family in 2017. The technical facilities are up to date, and the quality of the wines is consistent. We’ll need to monitor its stylistic evolution in future vintages, but we have no concerns whatsoever about the new owners’ ability to take it even further.

I don't recall ever tasting a Haut-Batailley with such pronounced tannins, yet the tannins are flavorful and very ripe, displaying great beauty and purity. The wine is full-bodied, the tannins are well-integrated, and the finish is long and intense.

The nose is elegant, fresh, and beautifully refined, with a certain intensity. It reveals notes of vibrant black cherry and blackberry, along with more subtle hints of blueberry, combined with touches of raspberry, hints of blond tobacco, licorice, and blue berries, as well as subtle hints of star anise and a very subtle hint of pepper. On the palate, it is fruity, mineral, beautifully balanced, and full of elegance, offering freshness, lovely definition, finesse, and an almost ethereal quality. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy, juicy blackberry, juicy blackcurrant, and, to a lesser extent, blue berries, combined with hints of raspberry, juicy plum, and violet, as well as hints of tobacco, nutmeg, a subtle hint of cardamom, a touch of iodine, and a very subtle hint of pepper. The tannins are elegant and well-integrated. Good length. A very subtle hint of caramelization on the finish and in the aftertaste.
