"The very definition of a second wine!"

" It fits the definition of a second wine: fruitier and easier to drink. The nose offers lovely notes of blackberry and dark fruit, with plenty of Merlot. Nice acidity and balance here; the wine isn’t loud, but it’s very delicate and refined. It’s juicy, with a crushed stone texture, which brings out lively fruit, yet retains depth and definition. Crushed stone and licorice, but overall easy, accessible, with good balance and flavor. Cool, classic, and refreshing. It isn’t extremely complex or particularly fruity; it’s leaner than expected, but it’s quite charming. Very easy to drink.” (Decanter 2023)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

The Cazes family now owns this estate, which originated as a division of Château Batailley. The vineyards are easily recognizable by the picturesque tower known as the “Aspic,” which stands in the middle of them, and by the wine-red color of the winery. Under the Borie family, the estate produced an elegant and relatively supple Pauillac; it now appears to have gained in body and intensity without losing any of its finesse.

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

A new chapter is about to begin for this estate, which was long managed under a leasehold arrangement by François-Xavier Borie (Grand-Puy-Lacoste) and was sold to the Cazes family in 2017. The technical facilities are up to date, and the quality of the wines is consistent. We will need to monitor its stylistic evolution in the coming vintages, but we have no concerns whatsoever about the new owners’ ability to take it even further.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 90/100 (Very good wine)

About the wine:

Captivating, with an open, airy character combined with rich, deep flavors of blackberry and blackcurrant, complemented by notes of tobacco and sweetgum. It finishes with a fragrant, old-school character. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy now through 2033.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 90/100

About the wine:

The 2020 vintage, bottled after 12 months in barrel, has clearly come into its own since I tasted it in barrel. It bursts from the glass with aromas of red cherries and crushed strawberries, along with hints of black plum and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very clean with a hint of crushed black pepper and graphite leading into a well-balanced finish. Very good. 2025–2035

James Suckling

Wine rated (2021 guide) 91-92/100

About the wine:

A firm, silky red with medium body, well-integrated tannins, and a fresh finish. It displays linear depth and structure for a second wine.

Le Figaro Wines

Wine rated (2021 guide) 91/100

About the wine:

The nose opens with a delicate bouquet of ripe cherries. This same sweetness carries through on the palate, with aromas of summer red fruits, creating a delicious, refreshing wine with a hint of acidity. 2028–2040
