Wine rated 15.5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the wine:

A very pure, clean, and deep nose, with pronounced notes of blackcurrant, blueberry, and blackberry; the palate is straightforward and full-bodied, with crisp, fresh tannins and a good finish. A wine with character, fresh and lively.

About the estate:

In 2012, Florence and Daniel Cathiard acquired the 12 hectares of Thil Comte Clary, which adjoins their classified growth Smith Haut-Lafitte: three hectares of white wine, divided equally between Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, and nearly nine hectares of red wine, with a very high proportion of Merlot. Today, this estate benefits from the expertise of the Smith team. The wines are refined, charming, and perfectly balanced.

Wine rated (2017 guide) 89–91/100 (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2019 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Château le Thil (Comte Clary) 2016, one of the estates owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard of Smith Haut Lafitte, is a 100% Merlot this vintage, following the removal of the Cabernet Sauvignon vines to make way for Cabernet Franc. The nose is clean and pure, without excessive intensity, offering aromas of Boysenberry jam and crushed strawberries. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely mineral opening, a bit masculine and reserved, yet well-balanced. The finish ends on quite elegant notes of blackberry and black plum.[...]

About the wine:

A lovely freshness with blackberries, blueberries, and herbal notes. Medium-bodied to full-bodied on the palate, rich and dense with a lovely finish. Will need a year or two to open up. A pure Merlot to be enjoyed after 2021.

Dark color with a light rim. The nose offers notes of black fruits, such as blueberries and blackberries. The palate is smooth, and the fruit notes linger on the finish.
