"Remarkable value for money! B&D"
"The bouquet of the 2019 vintage reveals itself delicately. Hints of blackberries and peppermint followed by a touch of graphite. On the palate, the attack suggests a slender character, but that's without counting on the tannic structure that reveals itself step by step, ideally supported by the acidity. The wine has body, muscle, and plenty of freshness. It can certainly be enjoyed in its youth, but like its predecessors, it will be worth waiting for!" (Yves Beck 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 91/100
Rated estate (2020 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)
About wine:
Slightly softer than Croix de Beaucaillou, but with a very attractive mouthfeel, supple, aromatic clarity and the aromatic elegance of the vintage and terroir. Great progress for this second wine and, above all, remarkable value for money.
About the estate:
The Château's vast vineyard is located on one of the most sumptuous and homogeneous plateaus of deep gravel in the entire Médoc region. It has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997. Few Médoc wines, even among the Premiers Crus, can boast such a homogeneous terroir, despite its size, as Gruaud-Larose. One might imagine that 80% of the vines produce the grand vin, but here the selection process is even more rigorous, which is particularly evident in the grand vin, ideally full-bodied and harmonious, and even more precise over the last three years thanks to a new, female generation of vineyard managers and cellar masters who are more rigorous and inspired. By nature, it very rarely dries out with long aging, and fifty-year-old bottles such as the 1962 or 1961 are still as impressive as ever.

About the estate:
Created in the early 18th century by the Gruaud family, the estate passed into the hands of the Larose family in 1771, who added their name and built the neoclassical château. In 1812, the Balguerie and Sarget families bought the property, then split, giving rise to Gruaud Larose-Bethmann and Gruaud Larose-Sarget. The estates were reunited in 1934 thanks to Désiré Cordier. Sold in 1983 to institutional investors, Gruaud Larose was bought back in 1997 by the Taillan family group (Merlaut), which now owns a vast vineyard of 82 hectares, almost all in one piece.

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
The vineyard is very well located on a plateau of deep gravel with perfect homogeneity in the southern part of the commune of Saint-Julien, where the vines thrive remarkably well. Known for producing powerful wines in the 1980s and 1990s, often with a slightly animalistic character, the cru now offers recent vintages with more precise aromas. The Merlaut family has optimized the technical facilities that the Alcatel group, the vineyard's short-lived owner, had installed. It has also chosen to give Gruaud Larose wines a more delicious and indulgent profile, making them accessible in their youth. The latest vintages show progress in this direction, with wines that have also gained in precision. The pricing policy advocated by Jean Merlaut makes Gruaud a brand that is always accessible, which we welcome.

About wine:
Sarget de Gruaud-Larose 2019 has a well-defined bouquet of tertiary red fruits, initially discreet but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruits, quite tarry with a good proportion of tobacco and black pepper on the finish. There is a lot going on in this wine and it should age well in the bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2026–2040

About wine:
A lovely fruity nose, with spring flowers and very pleasant vegetal notes. The palate is fresh and charming, revealing notes of blueberry and honeysuckle. The simplicity and straightforwardness of this wine make it very drinkable. The embodiment of classicism.

Vert de Vin
Wine rated (2022 guide) 92-93/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)
About wine:
The nose is fruity and delicious. It offers lovely notes of fleshy strawberries, delicious red berries and a hint of gray pepper, combined with subtle hints of crushed blackberries and delicate touches of vanilla and cardamom. The palate is fresh, mineral, balanced and elegant, with a lovely richness, a finely creamy texture, a subtle straightforwardness and a beautiful salinity/iodine. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy wild strawberry, crushed redcurrants and, more subtly, fresh flowers, combined with hints of crushed blackberry, vanilla, cardamom and a subtle touch of pepper. The tannins are precise and racy. Good length. Lovely sapidity. Beautiful persistence.
