Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2020 guide) 92/100
Rated estate (2021 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the wine:
A lovely style, reminiscent of a fine wine, with good body and freshness to balance the grapes’ high ripeness. A perfect wine in its category, and a reasonable price that makes it accessible to everyone.
About the estate:
This vast vineyard estate, as consistent in character as its neighbor Gruaud-Larose, has seen its vines mature and lend an unprecedented intensity to its grand cru, while refining its style over the past three years thanks to the efforts of the current technical team. Its wine is a straightforward, classic, almost mineral expression of the finest terroirs of Saint-Julien, revealing an undeniable similarity in flavor and style to Léoville-Las-Cases—which is no small compliment. Excellent value for money.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 90/100
About the wine:
Aromas of flowers and blackcurrants. Very smooth and juicy with a rounded mouthfeel and plenty of flavor. Soft and lively, with good depth; understated yet well-balanced and well-presented. 2022–2030
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
5-star rated estate (Outstanding production)
About the estate:
It is often thanks to the owner’s dedication that Bordeaux châteaux are able to reach their full potential. Lagrange was not so fortunate, changing hands frequently. It was not until the arrival of the Japanese group Suntory in 1983 that the estate received the attention it deserved: the vineyard was replanted, a new winery was built, and, most importantly, a dynamic team led by Marcel Ducasse was assembled—replaced in 2007 by Bruno Eynard, who had served as his assistant for 17 years. The new winery now facilitates even more precise single-vineyard winemaking.

Rated estate (2019 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Acquired by the Japanese group Suntory in 1983, the château quickly established itself as a reliable and consistent choice within the appellation, producing elegant, well-structured, and consistently affordable wines. A vast estate managed with great care, though its most recent vintages—while by no means lacking in merit—seemed to us somewhat less compelling. In a highly competitive landscape, facing neighbors who spare no detail in producing the finest wines possible, Lagrange appears somewhat stagnant, leading us to remove its star.
James Suckling
Wine rated (2022 guide) 92/100
Rated estate (2021 guide) Recommended
About the wine:
Distinct aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, with notes of dried flowers and sandalwood. It is full-bodied, yet features very tight, refined tannins that linger throughout the finish. Very well made.
Vert de Vin
Wine rated (2020 guide) 93/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)
About the wine:
The nose is elegant, rich, and powerful. It features notes of juicy, pulpy boysenberry and wild raspberry, with a hint of cubeb pepper, combined with hints of ripe black berries, pulpy black plum, and subtle hints of refined minerality. The palate is fruity, balanced, and offers tension, precision, richness, and a touch of freshness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy blackcurrant, boysenberry, and, more subtly, tart red berries, combined with hints of tart wild raspberry as well as subtle notes of zan, toasted hazelnut, and chocolate. Good length. The tannins are elegant.

If you’re looking for the power and vigor typically associated with the finesse and depth that characterize Saint-Julien, look elsewhere, as Les Fiefs distinguishes itself not through body and structure, but rather through freshness and smoothness. A composed character, firm and tight tannins, a slender texture concentrated in fruit, enhanced by balsamic and spicy aromas, and a strong finish, enlivened by a touch of acidity. Despite the 2019 vintage being considered exceptional, this second wine offers little in the way of excitement. Perhaps we need to wait a few years for the wine to open up and gain more depth? In any case, it tasted better the next day paired with a fillet of roe deer served with spring snow peas. Score = 3.9.
