Undoubtedly the greatest wine we have seen produced in this appellation. An ideal definition of what one should expect from a fine Saint-Julien. Excellent value for money and a remarkable success.

About the estate:

This vast wine estate, which is as consistent as its neighbor Gruaud-Larose, has seen its vines age and give the grand wine an unprecedented intensity, while refining its style over the past three years thanks to the efforts of the current technical team. Its wine is a straightforward, classic, almost mineral expression of the best soils of Saint-Julien, revealing an undeniable similarity in flavor and style with Léoville-Las-Cases, which is no small compliment. Excellent value for money.

Structured and very appealing on the palate, it has a rich texture without being overly present. Rich yet lively, it offers beautiful freshness and ripe fruit aromas. I love the delicacy of the tannins, which bring great finesse and precision. It is fresh and serene, without excess, perfectly harmonious, making it a classic style wine. About the estate:

It is often thanks to the determination of the owner that Bordeaux châteaux are able to find their expression. Lagrange was unlucky, changing owners frequently. It was not until the arrival of the Japanese group Suntory in 1983 that it received the attention it deserved: restoration of the vineyard, a new winery and, above all, a crack team led by Marcel Ducasse—replaced in 2007 by Bruno Eynard, who had assisted him for 17 years. The new winery is now used for even more sophisticated plot-by-plot vinification.

Acquired by the Japanese group Suntory in 1983, the château quickly established itself as a reliable and consistent performer within the appellation, producing elegant, well-structured and consistently affordable wines. A vast estate run with great professionalism, but whose latest vintages, while still worthy, seemed a little less convincing to us. In a highly competitive world, faced with neighbors who spare no detail in their quest to produce the greatest wines possible, Lagrange seems a little static, which has led us to remove its star.

Blackcurrant, ripe black cherries, freshly sharpened pencil lead, leather, and violet blossom in Château Lagrange 2022, a remarkably pure, concentrated, and powerful Saint-Julien with fine tannins and a silky, balanced texture. Its fruitiness allows it to shine today. As with many great Médocs, it would not be surprising if it closed up after 2 to 3 years of bottle aging. This is a wine with great aging potential. 2029-2059

Beautiful intensity, a certain concentration on well-balanced black fruit, strawberry jam, a touch of roasting. This is a wine built on a firm and assertive tannic structure, with a well-centered body that unfolds at length. The acidity, nourished by fresh blackcurrant, grips the palate. This is a superb wine for aging.

The bouquet of Lagrange reveals itself with subtlety and elegance. It is harmonious, precise, and deep. No single element dominates, except for the notion of finesse. Delicate nuances of fresh wood precede aromas of blueberries, a hint of graphite, menthol notes, and a touch of licorice. The silky attack gives way to a linear, velvety, elegant, and deep wine. Its tannins appear late and unfold their power with tact and precision. They provide valuable support and ensure excellent aging potential, without precluding the enjoyment of the wine in its youth.
