"Seductive, it stands out in particular for its great purity and good length!"

" Fiefs de Lagrange perfectly embodies what we expect from a second wine: it must be appealing and make you want to taste the first! The bright fruitiness of the bouquet is so pleasant that it invites you to taste the wine. The juicy, mouthwatering character highlights the freshness of Fiefs de Lagrange. It can be enjoyed from a young age. A sapid and delightful wine!" Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2021 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

This vast wine estate, which is as consistent as its neighbor Gruaud-Larose, has seen its vines age and give the grand wine an unprecedented intensity, while refining its style over the past three years thanks to the efforts of the current technical team. Its wine is a straightforward, classic, almost mineral expression of the best soils of Saint-Julien, revealing an undeniable similarity in flavor and style with Léoville-Las-Cases, which is no small compliment. Excellent value for money.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

5-star rated estate (Outstanding production)

About the estate:

It is often thanks to the determination of the owner that Bordeaux châteaux are able to find their expression. Lagrange was unlucky, changing owners frequently. It was not until the arrival of the Japanese group Suntory in 1983 that it received the attention it deserved: restoration of the vineyard, a new winery and, above all, a crack team led by Marcel Ducasse—replaced in 2007 by Bruno Eynard, who had assisted him for 17 years. The new winery is now used for even more sophisticated plot-by-plot vinification.

Rated estate (2019 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

Acquired by the Japanese group Suntory in 1983, the château quickly established itself as a reliable and consistent performer within the appellation, producing elegant, well-structured and consistently affordable wines. A vast estate run with great professionalism, but whose latest vintages, while still worthy, seemed a little less convincing to us. In a highly competitive world, faced with neighbors who spare no detail in their quest to produce the greatest wines possible, Lagrange seems a little static, which has led us to remove its star.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 90/100

About wine:

Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2020 offers a very expressive bouquet, dominated by blackberry and wild strawberry, with aromas of freshly rolled tobacco and a slight mineral note. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine, fleshy tannins. Round and silky, without being exceptionally complex, it stands out for its beautiful length and purity. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2027-2038

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 05/01/2023

If you are looking for the power and vigor associated with the finesse and depth that generally characterize Saint-Julien, look elsewhere, because Les Fiefs wines are distinguished not by their body and depth, but by their freshness and smoothness. It has a calm character, straight and tight tannins, a slender texture and concentrated fruit flavors enhanced by balsamic and spicy aromas, with a strong finish lifted by a touch of acidity. Despite the 2019 vintage being considered exceptional, this second wine is not particularly exciting. Perhaps we need to wait a few years for the wine to blossom and develop more depth? In any case, it tasted better the next day paired with a fillet of roe deer and spring snow peas. Rating = 3.9.
