"It is one of the most opulent and flamboyant wines of the Médoc in 2022. A spectacular level!"

"A stunning Léoville Poyferré, probably one of the best in a long time. Impressive depth and structure, revealing an intense fruit matrix, full of fresh blackberries and a touch of ink and pencil lead. Such verticality on the palate, with beautiful balance and a clean finish that lingers for over a minute. Great potential ahead. Tasted at the UCGB tasting, it was one of the best wines of the day. Rated estate (2020 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

The vineyard is located in a privileged position opposite the best plots of Léoville-Las Cases and in line with those of Pichon-Longueville Baron. The wine perfectly reflects this location, regularly ranking among the most powerful but also the most complex and harmonious in the entire Médoc region. A slightly higher percentage of Merlot than the other two Léovilles gives it a slightly rounder texture. Didier Cuvelier is taking semi-retirement but will of course continue to ensure the continuity of the excellence he has established. Pavillon-de-Poyferré, now the château's true second wine, is progressing, as is Moulin-Riche, now produced from its own vineyard, rather like Clos-du-Marquis in relation to the Léoville grand vin.

Wine noted (guide 2026) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About wine:

Notes of violet and aromatic herbs refresh a powerful, distinguished nose, blending black fruits, venison, spices, and roasted aromas. The attack is impressive, full-bodied, and dense, as is the mid-palate, which is very full, fleshy, velvety, and woven with firm, tight tannins, but without a hint of astringency. All this is carried by a superb underlying freshness. Long and full of spices and ripe fruit, the finish is impressive and in perfect harmony. An admirable 2022, broad-shouldered and with very good aging potential. 2030-2045

About the estate:

Like the two other wines produced on the former Léoville estate, Poyferré, named after the Count of Poyferré, who came from a noble family in Armagnac and inherited the vineyard from his wife during the division, benefits from a prime terroir. Covering an area of 80 hectares, it is spread across the entire commune of Saint-Julien: to the east, near the Gironde, there are brown gravel and pebbles; to the west, black sand. These assets have been enhanced since 1979 by Didier Cuvelier, whose family, former wine merchants in Lille, acquired the property in 1920.

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

Since the late 1970s and the arrival of Didier Cuvelier, this second growth has been completely renovated. Many plots have been replanted and the winemaking equipment updated. The vines are now of a respectable age and the wine is in the running for excellence within an appellation that has no shortage of challengers. The wines possess a vitality and fullness that now place them at the top of the appellation. The terroir gives Poyferré wines their deep color, full-bodied and lively texture, broad spicy bouquet, and potential for longevity.

About wine:

No. 22/100 in James Suckling's "Top 100 Best French Wines in 2025"

A breathtaking Léoville Poyferré, probably one of the best in a long time. Impressive depth and structure, revealing an intense fruity matrix, full of fresh blackberries and a touch of ink and pencil lead. Such verticality on the palate, with beautiful balance and a clean finish that lingers for over a minute. Great potential ahead. Tasted at the UCGB tasting, it was one of the best wines of the day. Drink after 2028. It should improve over the next 10 to 15 years.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 100/100

About wine:

Reminiscent of the 2018 vintage (and 2009), and even slightly more concentrated, Château Léoville Poyferré 2022 is one of the most opulent and flamboyant wines from the Médoc in 2022. It is incredibly intense yet light and graceful. Its dense, intense purple color is followed by a sensational aroma of crème de cassis, graphite, dark chocolate, burnt earth, and flowers. Full-bodied on the palate, it offers exceptional fruity richness, a harmonious mouthfeel, beautifully integrated oak, tannins, and acidity, with no harshness and a magnificent finish. It shines today, while possessing a beautiful underlying structure, and will evolve gracefully over the next 30 years. The 2022 is based on 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged for 18 to 20 months in 80% new oak. 2025-2055

Wine rated (2024 guide) 98/100

About wine:

Superb bouquet in terms of both intensity and diversity. It begins by emphasizing its freshness with peppermint aromas and floral nuances, followed by notes of blueberry and elderberry and a touch of graphite. Creamy on the attack, the wine stands out for its harmony, its smooth and silky qualities giving way to powerful, compact tannins and a healthy austerity that ensures freshness, salinity, and a long finish. A very great Poyferré that will be worth waiting for! 2029-2054

Wine rated (2023 guide) 99/100

About wine:

Dark, intense, purple and beautiful color. Intense, refined, fruity, pure, and subtle on the nose. Creamy touch when swirled. Meticulously smooth on the palate, with a bright flavor, a mellow body, and greater depth than usual. Complex and energetic, the wine evolves with well-controlled power and a grand finish with noble tannins. It's so captivating.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 98/100

About wine:

The explosive nose, with its floral notes, espresso, licorice, black cherries, spices, and tobacco, immediately captures the attention. But it is on the palate that the wine seals its elegance, with its irresistible display of black and red fruits, with a silky and indulgent texture that coats the taste buds with pure and deep notes of black and red berries. The sensual notes on the finish are perfect from start to finish. This wine is composed of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Drink between 2029 and 2055.
