Chablis’s leading producer consistently delivers a faithful interpretation of the appellation, thanks to the precise and meticulous work of winemaker Vincent Bartement. As always, the wines are released with a one-vintage delay; this year’s release is the 2016 vintage—a complicated year, but one in which the Mont-de-Milieu terroir fared very well. Other terroirs that the winery usually handles well taste a little less impressive this time around—let’s wait for the 2017s!

La Chablisienne’s most serious Chablis Villages is the 2017 Chablis Les Vénérables Vieilles Vignes, a cuvée produced from vines with an average age of 50 years. It is not released for sale until it has aged a bit: the 2015 vintage is currently on the market. It is more reserved at first, opening up in the glass with aromas of citrus oil and damp stones. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, textured, and layered, with excellent concentration and tension, finishing with a precise and lingering aftertaste.

About the estate:
The largest producer of Chablis ranks among France’s top cooperatives, demonstrating equal skill in both business and winemaking. Among the many vintages produced, it can be difficult to choose, but all the wines now benefit from flawless technical expertise in pressing and aging on lees. The standout specialties include the consistently excellent Chablis Vieilles Vignes and the Premiers Crus in heavy bottles, which rival the finest wines from private estates—not to mention the famous Grand Cru Château Grenouilles, which should not be drunk too young! The entry-level wines have improved significantly and have shed the reductive notes that once characterized them. La Chablisienne is in fine form!

This vintage shows consistent quality and is a real pleasure to drink. The palate is full-bodied, with the fruit blending beautifully with a lovely minerality.

Pretty run-of-the-mill for a Chablis. I won't be buying it again. The bouquet has somewhat unpleasant, very "green" aromas; the palate, on the other hand, is decent for a Chablis, but the overall quality within the appellation remains fairly average. Not a good buy given the price.
