Pouilly-Vinzelles

The Pouilly-Vinzelles Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is a village appellation in the Mâconnais region of Saône-et-Loire. Its boundaries were established in 1931 and it was officially recognized in 1940; the appellation may be followed by the name of a "climat," a specific vineyard site denoting a particular terroir. The production area of the Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC is located in the municipalities of Vinzelles and Loché.

Neighboring the Solutré archaeological complex, the Pouilly-Vinzelles wine appellation is founded on the same Jurassic rocks (Bathonian and Bajocian) that crown the hills of the Mâconnais region. The soils, whose variations are primarily determined by the topography between the summit and the base of the hillside, are predominantly clay-limestone with a rust-colored hue. The average altitude (200 to 250 meters) and east-facing exposure are perfectly suited to Chardonnay in this continental, somewhat southern climate, allowing for early harvests and yielding rich, powerful musts. Pouilly-Vinzelles wine is crafted by young, ambitious winemakers using the finest traditional methods.

Pouilly-Vinzelles wines are white wines made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety. They offer a fruity, citrusy aromatic profile. After 3 to 5 years in the bottle, they develop power and roundness. Domaine de la Soufrandière - Bret Brothers has become a must-try in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation.
