“Clos de Tavannes shares with the great Bourgueil Cabernets grown on tuffeau soil a tannic finish that is as fresh as it is spicy. ” (The Guide to the Best Wines of France 2016 - RVF) This Santenay 1er Cru reveals itself with a fruity profile, featuring notes of cherry. Similar to the 1er Cru Morgeot from Chassagne-Montrachet, it displays great complexity and remarkable length.

Wine rated (2016 guide) 15.5/20 + Editor's Choice (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2016 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

Delicate and floral, with a silky opening note of cherry, this wine has velvety tannins.

About the estate:

A close-knit family, a generous spirit, an innate sense of balance in flavor, and beautiful vineyards on the finest terroirs of Saint-Aubin and Santenay—all of this explains the estate’s consistent success over the past twenty years. The Saint-Aubin whites are certainly among the best value wines in Burgundy.

Wine rated (2016 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2016 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

Like the great Bourgueil Cabernets aged in tuffeau barrels, Clos de Tavannes offers a tannic finish that is both fresh and spicy. It’s also worth laying down.

About the estate:

Jean-Baptiste Clair, 36, joined the family business in 2000 alongside his father and has since expanded the estate, which now spans 15 hectares in Saint-Aubin and Santenay. “My training as a white wine winemaker complements my father’s expertise; he had already mastered red wines by the 1980s,” he explains. Their premier terroirs in Saint-Aubin (En Remilly, Les Murgers des Dents de Chien, Sur Gamay...) combine notes of sweet chalk, ripeness, and density, without losing the freshness that is the hallmark of Saint-Aubin. The whites are refined and crystalline. The reds are among the most alluring in Santenay. The Clair family was among the first to understand the benefits of cooling the grapes to extract their full aromatic potential. The grapes are harvested from first-rate terroirs.
