“Consistently recognized in our tastings over the past four years, this estate in the northwestern part of the Montagne de Reims stands out first and foremost for its respect for the grapes, which naturally leads to plot-by-plot selection and winemaking. While not yet certified organic, Raphaël Bérèche has avoided chemical weed control since 2004. He continues the barrel and demi-muid aging practices initiated by his father, Jean-Pierre, who released his first oak-aged cuvée (Reflet d’Antan) twenty years ago. On a terroir dominated by Pinot Noir and Meunier—varieties that are naturally robust in expression—the pursuit of ripeness is never achieved at the expense of tension on the palate. Dosages are light, if not nonexistent (Cuvée Zéro).”
