"A true benchmark, with remarkable precision!"

"Very appealing nose of lemon blossom and lemon meringue pie. Very elegant and delicate, with an inner strength that doesn't make it imposing at all. I like the interaction between the fine mousse and citrus fruits on the medium-bodied palate. Long finish with subtle spicy notes. Drink now." (James Suckling).

Food and wine pairings

This very "classic" champagne is the most versatile in the Deutz range: ideal as an aperitif, it can accompany fish in sauce (salmon, turbot, John Dory), poultry, and white meats in particular...

Wine rated (2025 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2025 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

After a final harvest in 2022, which will be remembered as excellent for the quality of the grapes, Michel Davesne handed over the keys to the cellar to Caroline Latrive, but the fundamentals of this beautiful house in Aÿ, founded in 1838, remain unchanged. Most of the grapes are sourced from within a 30-kilometer radius of Epernay, the three grape varieties are honored, and the wines are vinified in stainless steel vats, as is the storage of reserve wines. The range is well constructed, except for the non-vintage rosé, which could benefit from more depth. We particularly enjoyed the blanc de blancs, the Amour cuvée, and of course the William Deutz and Hommage à William Deutz.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

Originally from Aachen, wine merchants William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann founded this prestigious house in 1838. Long a family-owned business, the company joined the Roederer group in 1993. Renowned for its meticulous blends (30 to 40 different crus for its Classic brut), it owns 46 hectares of vineyards and sources its grapes from within a 30 km radius of the grand cru Aÿ, in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. In 2023, after 26 years as president of the house, Fabrice Rosset handed over the reins to Marc Hoellinger, while Michel Davesne retired and passed the keys to the cellar to Caroline Latrive, who joined from Ayala.

Rated estate (2025 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

This authentic house, part of the Rouzaud family (Louis Roederer champagnes), is making its mark and establishing the consistency of its range with a well-established, precise, and vinous style. In a minor revolution, Marc Hoellinger, a defector from LVMH, succeeded Fabrice Rosset, who had been at the helm of this house for a quarter of a century. Owner of significant land in Champagne, particularly in the Montagne de Reims, Deutz continues to produce champagnes that are faithful to their terroir of origin, predominantly Pinot, which are classic, elegant, deep, and straightforward. Each year, the house produces a beautiful Brut Classic, precise and structured, with fine bubbles. A master of black grapes, Deutz also excels in blanc de blancs with Amour de Deutz, a wine that is both racy and invigorating. As with the previous edition, the rosés are subtle and very well-balanced. We are pleased to note that the rest of the range is also up to standard.

About wine:

A blend of the three main Champagne grape varieties, this non-vintage champagne is mature, with an aroma of white fruits and rich apple and citrus flavors. A touch of minerality rounds out the wine.

Delicate and easy to digest, very fruity and pleasant. A little expensive, however.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 04/25/2022

Classic brut... very classic, with a chic green and gold label in the Empire style. Pale gold color, lively nose, fine, sparkling bubbles. With aromas of yellow stone fruits and citrus, this cuvée strikes a good balance between freshness and creaminess, thanks in part to its toasted and vanilla notes. On the other hand, it lacks length and real personality. The emphasis here is on finesse and lightness, making it a versatile companion, ideal for an aperitif or a fine Bresse chicken. It's a shame that this BSA, a victim of its own success, has seen its price rise exponentially, especially since its acquisition by the Roederer family group: nearly 20% in one year, which is prohibitive! Therefore, rating = 3.

My favorite champagne for a budget between $38 and $45. A full-bodied champagne with a lovely long finish.

Admittedly, the bubbles are fine and the overall effect is elegant, but I find this champagne very "smooth," singularly lacking in character, flavor, and distinctiveness.

Extra-fine bubbles, light, fragrant, and long on the palate, Gosset is a favorite among the best champagnes at a reasonable price.

A (very) slight disappointment, the Deutz Brut Classic was very good, whereas in our memories it represented excellence.
