“A true benchmark, with remarkable precision!”
“A very appealing nose of lemon blossoms and lemon meringue pie. Very elegant and delicate, with an inner strength that doesn’t make it seem overpowering at all. I love the interplay between the fine mousse and the citrus notes on the medium-bodied palate. A long finish with subtle spicy notes. Drink now.” (James Suckling).

Food and wine pairings
This very "classic" champagne is the most versatile in the Deutz range: an ideal aperitif, it pairs well with fish in sauce (salmon, turbot, John Dory), poultry, and white meats, among other dishes...
Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2025 guide) 92/100
Rated estate (2025 guide) 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Following the 2022 harvest—which will be remembered as exceptional for the quality of its grapes—Michel Davesne is handing over the reins of the winery to Caroline Latrive, though the core values of this fine Aÿ estate, founded in 1838, remain unchanged. Most of the grapes come from within a 30-kilometer radius of Épernay; the three grape varieties take center stage, and vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, as does the aging of reserve wines. The lineup is well-structured, though the non-vintage rosé could benefit from more depth. We particularly enjoy the Blanc de Blancs, the Cuvée Amour, and of course the William Deutz and Hommage à William Deutz.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Originally from Aachen, wine merchants William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann founded this prestigious house in 1838. Long a family-owned business, the company joined the Roederer group in 1993. Renowned for its meticulous blends (30 to 40 different crus for its Classic brut), it owns 46 hectares and sources its grapes from a limited radius of 30 km around the grand cru Aÿ, in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. In 2023, after 26 years as president of the house, Fabrice Rosset handed the reins to Marc Hoellinger, while Michel Davesne, having retired, passed the keys to the cellar to Caroline Latrive, who came from Ayala.

Rated estate (2025 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the estate:
This true institution, part of the Rouzaud family (Louis Roederer champagnes), has carved out its own path and established a consistent portfolio characterized by a well-defined, precise, and full-bodied style. In a minor revolution, Marc Hoellinger, a defector from LVMH, succeeded Fabrice Rosset, who had led this house for a quarter of a century. Owner of significant vineyards in Champagne, particularly in the Montagne de Reims, Deutz continues to produce champagnes faithful to their terroir of origin—Pinot-dominated wines that are at once classic, elegant, deep, and straightforward. Each year, the house produces a beautiful Brut Classic—precise and structured, with fine bubbles. A master of black grapes, Deutz also shines with its Blanc de Blancs, Amour de Deutz, a wine that is both racy and invigorating. As with the previous vintage, the rosés are subtle and perfectly balanced. We are pleased to note that the rest of the range holds its own.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 90/100
About the wine:
A blend of the three main Champagne grape varieties, this non-vintage champagne is full-bodied, with aromas of white fruit and rich flavors of apple and citrus. A hint of minerality rounds out the wine.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 91/100

About the wine:
Notes of lime, white flowers, and almond. Light to medium-bodied on the palate, with a fine mousse, crisp, zesty acidity, and a clean finish. Clean finish, but the aftertaste is a bit simple. Best enjoyed now.

Light and easy to drink, very fruity and pleasant. A bit pricey, though.

A classic brut... very classic, with a "chic" green-and-gold "Empire"-style label. Pale gold in color, with a lively nose and fine, sparkling bubbles. Featuring aromas of yellow stone fruits and citrus, this cuvée strikes a good balance between freshness and creaminess, thanks in part to its toasty and vanilla notes. On the other hand, it lacks length and true personality. Here, the focus is on finesse and lightness, making it a versatile companion, ideal for an aperitif or a fine Bresse chicken. It’s a shame that this BSA, a victim of its own success, has seen its price rise exponentially, especially since its acquisition by the family-owned Roederer Group: nearly 20% in one year—that’s becoming prohibitive!!! As a result, rating = 3.

My favorite champagne in the $32–$38 price range. A full-bodied champagne with a lovely finish.

Admittedly, the bubbles are fine and the overall impression is elegant, but to my taste this champagne remains very "smooth," singularly lacking in character, flavor, and distinctiveness.

Extra-fine bubbles, light, fragrant, and with a long finish—Gosset is a standout among the best champagnes at a reasonable price.

A (slight) disappointment: Deutz's Brut Classic was very good, whereas in our memory it had been the epitome of excellence.
