Gosset remains a small house in the world of Champagne’s giants, selling an average of one million bottles each year. At the helm of the technical team is a dynamic duo—Odilon de Varine and Gabrielle Malagu—who oversee a lineup that stays true to its core principles: freshness, liveliness, and minerality. To stay the course despite recent climate changes and the grapes’ increased ripeness, the house now favors Chardonnay in its blends, with a reduced proportion of Pinot Noir to maintain a consistent final flavor. Thanks to its consistency and distinctive style—the range offers numerous cuvées, including some made from extensively aged wines—it deserved to be awarded an additional star. About the wine:

Whether it’s Celebris, the vintage prestige cuvée—just like last year—or the Grand Rosé, Gosset’s rosé cuvées feature prominently in the Guide’s selections. Both rely heavily on Chardonnay to achieve great freshness. In this Grand Rosé, white grapes make up 48% of the blend, with 16% Meunier and 36% Pinot Noir (9% of which is vinified as red wine). The color is a rather soft pink, which highlights the effervescence. The nose becomes more intense with aeration, revealing aromas of red and black fruits (strawberry, blackcurrant), which blossom on the palate in a lingering finish, enlivened by a slight bitterness on the finish.

About the estate:

“The oldest house in Champagne” was founded in 1584—before the region’s wine became sparkling—by Pierre Gosset, a councilman of Aÿ and vineyard owner. At the time, the wines from this town—often red—competed at court with those from Beaune. Thirteen generations have succeeded Pierre Gosset. Now based in Épernay, the company has been part of the Renaud-Cointreau Group since 1993. Gosset champagnes do not undergo malolactic fermentation. In 2016, Odilon de Varine, deputy director and oenologist, succeeded Jean-Pierre Mareigner. He was joined the following year by Gabrielle Malagu, to whom he entrusted joint responsibility for the cellar at the end of 2022.

What an explosion of red berries—from cherry to raspberry to wild strawberry! A hint of praline and violet as well. The palate is firm and austere (best decanted), yet it doesn’t lack “juice” or salinity. A truly great rosé—crunchy, chalky, and fresh all at once. Perfect, of course, for pairing with fine shellfish or for declaring your love.

The first of the two rosés on offer, the Champagne Grand Brut Rosé NV boasts a vibrant peachy-pink color and opens with expressive aromas of raw honey, strawberries, orange sorbet, and fresh pastries. Medium-bodied with a velvety mousse, it rounds out on the palate, offering a pleasant chalky texture and an approachable, elegant profile. Best enjoyed now through 2032.
