Cariñena
Cariñena is a Denominación de Origen (DO) produced in the province of Zaragoza. It is the oldest denomination in the Autonomous Community of Aragon, and one of the oldest in Spain. Located 50 kilometers from Zaragoza, south of the Ebro river, in the Campo de Cariñena comarca, bordered to the south by the Sierra Virgen mountain range and to the west by the Calatayud DO wine region.
The Cariñena terroir is composed of reddish limestone over calcium carbonate rock strata and, in places, slate and clay. The climate is continental, with wide variations in temperature.
The most common grape variety is Grenache Noir (55%), used to make red and rosé wines, followed by Mazuelo and Tempranillo (15%). Viura (20%) is used for white wines. The recent introduction of foreign grape varieties has considerably broadened the aromatic palette of Cariñena wines . This diversity can be appreciated by tasting wines from Bodega Grandes Vinos y Viñedos, Bodegas Hermanos Torcal and Bodegas Ignacio Marín.
