Domaine Pierre Clavel
This 27-hectare estate, with its stony soils surrounded by forests and scrubland, stretches across the remarkable terroirs of Pic Saint Loup and La Méjanelle. The Clavel estate produces wines from three appellations: Coteaux du Languedoc, Pic Saint Loup, and Languedoc - La Méjanelle. Based in Assas, northeast of Montpellier, Estelle, Pierre, and their sons Martin and Antoine continue the work begun by the Clavel family, who originally manufactured nails.
The Clavel estate is certified organic and its entire approach is guided by biodynamic principles. Surrounded by other crops (cereals, orchards, meadows, woods, apiaries, etc.), the estate benefits from an extraordinary ecosystem that is conducive to the development of vines.
The Clavel estate'sgrape varietiesaretypical of the Languedoc region: Syrah, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Vaccarèse for red wines; Grenache Blanc, Roussane, and Viognier for white wines. The winemaking process is traditional and as natural as possible, with limited inputs in order to preserve the integrity of the juice. Concrete vats, 3,500-liter casks, and small 700-liter egg-shaped vats have been designed for aging the wines.
