Clos des Nines - Grès de Montpellier L'Orée 2019
16/20
Bettane & Desseauve
L’Orée is an aromatic reflection of the surrounding garrigue scrubland, with notes of blackberries and red berries underpinned by smoky and chocolatey hints. A true terroir wine, it is charming on the palate, with a silky, full-bodied attack. The floral finish is refreshing and crisp.

About the estate:
Le Clos des Nines is located in Fabrègues, in the Hérault region. Isabelle Mangeart runs this nine-hectare estate dedicated to wine and olive oil production. After a cool 2015 and a warmer 2016, the 2017 vintage strikes a superb balance between the volume on the palate provided by the high ripeness of the grapes and a welcome freshness.

About the estate:
In 2002, Isabelle Mangeart, sales manager at a multinational agri-food company, decided to change careers and created Clos des Nines from scratch, naming it after her three daughters (nines in Occitan). The 10-hectare vineyard, in a single block, is nestled in the heart of the garrigue and olive groves, between Sète and Montpellier.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 05/16/2023
Despite its original presentation, this vintage struggles to find its place due to its lack of appeal and its simple but relatively expensive style. Smooth on the palate, slightly austere and gripping, with concentrated, slightly smoky notes of cooked prunes, blackberries, and figs, counterbalanced by pronounced acidity. Once the warmth in the mid-palate has passed, this acidity carries the wine through to a spicy, sage-tinged finish, which is fairly short. The simplicity and strong southern character of L'Orée are perfectly suited to a Cévennes pork terrine, or the rustic melt-in-the-mouth texture of a traditional Aveyron black pudding tatin, accompanied by a red oak leaf salad. Rating = 3.4.
