Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Château de Cazeneuve is an old estate whose origins date back to the 9th century. The vineyards, which had fallen into disuse by the early 20th century, were revived by André Leenhardt, who now cultivates 25 hectares in the Pic Saint-Loup region. André produces lovely white wines. Good news: the small 2017 Les-Calcaires cuvée signals a shift for the estate toward wines that are dense, energetic, and refined. Highly successful, it is a perfect expression of the minerality that this type of soil brings to the classic Languedoc grape varieties. We were thoroughly impressed.

About the estate:

Château de Cazeneuve, an old 9th-century building, stands at the heart of the estate purchased by André Leenhardt in 1988 after he completed his studies in agronomy. Replanting, leaving the cooperative, and converting to organic farming (certified in 2010): André Leenhardt is now one of the iconic winemakers of Pic Saint-Loup, at the helm of a beautiful 35-hectare vineyard on clay-limestone soils.

Review by Mr. MASSIMILIANO G. Published on March 12, 2023

I was quite disappointed by a wine that doesn't match the style of the other Pic Saint-Loups I'm used to drinking (wines from Peyrus, among others). I can’t detect any of the bright fruitiness described in the 1j1v tasting notes; on the contrary, it’s quite austere, still very closed, with bitterness that’s a bit too pronounced even after decanting. I hope 3–4 years in the bottle will improve it, though right now I can’t quite see that happening... I think there are better options from this terroir.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Posted on 12/02/2022

An unpretentious entry-level wine, yet one that hides a delightful treat where the intensity of red fruits, combined with peppery notes, takes center stage. The palate is wonderfully juicy and lively, supported by soft, well-integrated tannins. This burst of fruit, paired with a lovely freshness, carries through to a long, spicy finish. The old Cinsault vines bring remarkable harmony and guaranteed mouthwatering pleasure. Ready to drink slightly chilled with oven-baked bruschetta topped with Bigorre black ham and Ossau Iraty cheese, accompanied by a salad of young greens. Rating = 4.1.
