Picpoul de Pinet
The appellation Picpoul de Pinet is a subregional appellation of the Hills of Languedoc. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, at the head of the Gulf of Lion, bordering the Etang de Thau, the A.O.C. vineyard Picpoul de Pinet covers an area of 1,300 hectares spread across the municipalities of Pinet, Pomérols, Castelnau-de-Guers, Montagnac, Mèze, and Florensac. It is the largest white wine region in the Languedoc.

The ancient Roman road known as the "Domitian Way" divides the Picpoul de Pinet wine region into two major terroirs. To the north lies an area where garrigue and pine forests alternate, where the vineyards rest on soils of Cretaceous or Miocene origin. With little maritime influence, this is a region of contrasts featuring abundant vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate. To the south lies a homogeneous area that opens fully onto the sea. Covered exclusively by Picpoul de Pinet vines, its climate is tempered by sea breezes and fog. The soil was formed during the Pliocene by continental river deposits. The climate of the Picpoul de Pinet region is Mediterranean, with low rainfall and mild winters. The summer season is dry.

The Picpoul de Pinet wines are exclusively white wines made from the white Piquepoul grape variety, grown using short pruning, whose L'Ormarine Winery provides some delightful examples.

Picpoul de Pinet white wine, in the heart of the Languedoc

On the shores of the Thau Lagoon, along the Mediterranean coast, the prestigious Picpoul de Pinet AOC vineyard spans over 1,300 hectares. Located right in the center of the SÈTE–PÉZENAS–AGDE triangle, it is the largest Picpoul white wine region in the Languedoc. Through white wine production, the winemakers have successfully maximized the potential of this exceptional terroir. Each year, this AOC produces 70,000 hectoliters dedicated entirely to Picpoul de Pinet white wine, with a yield of 60 hectoliters per hectare.

The Picpoul de Pinet AOC and its two great terroirs

The ancient Roman road known as the "Domitian Way" divides the area into two main terroirs. To the north lies a vast expanse of alternating pine forests and scrubland, where the vineyards are planted on soils of Miocene or Cretaceous origin. With less maritime influence, this region of contrasts boasts the lush vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate. To the south, a homogeneous area opens onto the sea. Covered by Picpoul de Pinet vineyards, sea fog and breezes temper its mild climate. As for the soil, it was formed during the Pliocene epoch through continental river deposits.

The region's climate

The region has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by low rainfall (averaging 600 mm) and mild winters. Summers tend to be dry. The maritime influence is significant, as it reduces daily temperature fluctuations:
• The water in the pond acts as a thermal buffer that slows down
• The sea breeze helps keep temperatures from rising too much during the day
• The drop in temperature at night Between June and September, the humid sea breezes significantly promote the ripening of the late-ripening white grape variety, Piquepoul.

An exquisite Pinet wine made from a single grape variety

The Picpoul de Pinet is an aromatic, dry wine with no harsh acidity. It is made exclusively from the Picpoul grape variety, grown on short-pruned vines, and the Ormarine winery offers some fine examples of it. This wine has long been a favorite among seafood lovers, who enjoy pairing it with local oysters from the Thau Lagoon. Its nose, with its splendid floral and citrus notes, pairs perfectly with its lively palate and the distinct briny flavor of the seafood.
