Forez hills
The Côtes du Forez vineyard is located on the first volcanic hillsides of the Massif Central, in the Loire department, between Saint-Etienne and Lyon upstream of the Loire River valley. The appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) was created in 2000. Today, the vineyard covers nearly 150 hectares and 17 communes: Boën, Leigneux, Trelins, Marcoux, Marcilly-le-Châtel, Pralong, Arthun, Bussy-Albieux, Champdieu, Ecotay l'Olme, Lézigneux, Moingt-Montbrison, Saint-Georges-Haute-Ville, Saint-Sixte, Saint-Thomas-la-Garde, Sainte-Agathe-la-Bouteresse, and Saint-Germain-Laval. There are nine winegrowers and one cooperative winery producing wine under the Côtes du Forez appellation.

This original and still little-known appellation consists mainly of two types of soil: basalt mounds of volcanic origin that are among the oldest volcanoes in France (60 million years old for Pic de Montaubourg, 20 million years old for those of Marcilly-le-Châtel) and a granite terroir, resulting from the erosion of the Massif Central.
The average altitude of the vineyards is between 400 and 600 meters. The vineyard benefits from the foehn effect coming from the Monts du Forez. Due to its suitability for the terroir and climate, the Gamay Saint Romain noir à jus blanc grape variety is perfectly suited to this region. Selected for centuries, this grape variety reaches perfect maturity every year in the appellation and expresses the intrinsic qualities of Gamay.
