Bettane & Desseauve

(Notes from the 2017 vintage)
Pinot Noir
old vines

"A true Sancerrois"

Produced in small quantities, only 40 acres, this red wine is a blend of selected old vines. The expression of Pinot Noir on clay-limestone and Kimmeridgian marl soils reveals a distinctive Sancerre character! A complex and precise nose evoking blueberries and blackberries, which lingers on the palate with powerful, ripe tannins and a woody finish.

About the estate:

Daniel Crochet is one of the most talented winemakers in the Loire Valley: he cultivates 10 hectares of vineyards spread between Bué and Sancerre, making the most of the white earth and caillotes soils. From the entry-level wines to the prestigious cuvées, all of his wines demonstrate great consistency. Among the whites, Plante des Prés and Chêne Marchand, located in the best areas of their locality, are among the very best Sauvignons in the region. This is a must for wine lovers.

Wine rating (2020 guide) 16.5/20 Favorite (2017 vintage)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

On the white soil and limestone of the commune of Bué, the discreet Daniel Crochet, François' cousin, has been running this high-quality family estate since 1996. The work here is very serious, with grass-covered vineyards, aging on lees, and careful vinification. The estate is fortunate to benefit from the finest plots in the area, particularly Plante des Prés and Chêne Marchand. We are impressed by the precision and depth of the reds from recent vintages and salute the meticulous work of Daniel Crochet. The whites, aged in enamel vats (and partially in demi-muids for Chêne Marchand), are beautifully crafted, carefully made and well-balanced. 2023 is the first vintage to be certified organic.
