This micro-cuvée, sourced from a single vineyard on high slopes, is aged for 18 months in new oak barrels. It is a powerful and full-bodied red from the South, with aromas of black fruit. The balance on the palate is perfect, and the finish lingers with notes of spice and ripe fruit. This is a wine made for aging; it should be opened a little while in advance to fully appreciate it.

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 91/100 (2019 vintage)
Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)
About the estate:
The limestone scree soil of this 29-hectare estate is typical of the Palette appellation. The natural amphitheater formed by the surrounding hills shields the vines from the mistral and creates a favorable microclimate. The talkative Stéphane Spitzglous, a local native, devotes himself to the vineyard as well as the cellar, and it’s a real pleasure to discover this property on the road between Sainte-Victoire and Aix. While in the early days the wine was sent to the cooperative, today he bottles everything at the estate—a source of great pride for him.

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
In 1996, Stéphane Spitzglous took over his grandfather Henri Bonnaud’s estate. After extensive construction work to build a single structure housing the cellar, the wine-making room, and the tasting room, he released his first vintage in 2004 and renamed the estate after his grandfather. The vineyard is located in Tholonet, southeast of Aix-en-Provence, facing Montagne Sainte-Victoire, and covers 29 hectares that have been farmed organically since 2013.
