"Le Grand Saint-Paul" is produced by Jérôme Grieco, a winemaker from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, who has been consistently praised by international critics since his first vintage in 2009. In 2013, *La Revue du Vin de France* named it "Discovery of the Year." This wine is made from a plot in the Côtes-du-Rhône Village appellation, and as Jérôme Grieco himself describes it, "it’s the estate’s little Châteauneuf." Lively, with its lovely, blood-red color and tangy acidity, and a fresh, lingering finish, it’s a sure bet—but in limited quantities!

Rated estate (2016 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable vintage, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Located in the vineyards near Orange, the estate’s 5 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape include century-old vines, which explains the intensity of the 2012 vintage presented here. The Côtes-du-Rhône from the same estate are also remarkable, and the young couple of winemakers now in charge are doing an exemplary job. Before this wine becomes too well-known, give it a chance to find a place in your cellar.

The wine had a strong reductive aroma upon opening. I didn’t decant it but let it sit for 24 hours with the bottle open. The aroma faded but didn’t disappear. Marketed as a “Petit Châteauneuf,” it lacks any of the typical characteristics of that style, even in a smaller bottle. You mainly smell Syrah and Mourvèdre, not Grenache. In my opinion, it’s the high proportion of Mourvèdre that’s the problem. And Mourvèdre is complicated—when it’s mishandled, it often smells like wild boar that’s been running too long.
