"A wine with character"

“The 2017 Cairanne l’Excellence is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, aged in tanks. It is a spicy wine, with notes reminiscent of cloves, cola, and allspice, as well as hints of clay soil. Full-bodied and velvety on the palate, it is not overly fruity but remains appealing thanks to its savory character and rich texture, with notes of coffee on the finish.” (Wine Advocate)

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated wine (2020 guide) Mentioned (Successful wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

Made from Grenache and Syrah vines of venerable age, this cuvée offers a distinctive nose, with notes of jam, licorice, and leather. This character carries over to the palate, which is generous and slightly animal-like, with a firm structure and tannins that are still austere at this stage. This intensity will need to mellow with cellaring.

About the estate:

The distant origins of the estate, located on the site of a priory, date back to the 12th century. The property has been passed down within the same family for four generations. Jean-Jacques Beaumet has been at the helm since 1988. He cultivates 37 hectares on the hills above Cairanne.

About the wine:

Much like the 2018 vintage, the 2017 Cairanne Excellence (60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, aged in concrete tanks) has a concentrated, medium- to full-bodied profile featuring abundant black fruit, spices, chocolate, and meaty notes, along with a fleshy, round, and opulent texture. Best enjoyed upon release and over the next 6 to 7 years.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on June 4, 2021

The exceptional 2017 vintage produces a Cairanne with a generous and full-bodied structure. On the palate, it unfolds with intense black fruit, licorice, coffee, and spices, supported by firm tannins. The finish is long and velvety. Rating: 3.8. It truly showed its full potential when paired with small lamb chops from the Alps seasoned with garrigue herbs, cooked over a charcoal BBQ, and served with a Provençal vegetable tian.
