"Made from vines around 70 years old on a south-facing slope (one of Condrieu's most famous), Niero's 2019 Condrieu Chéry is a textbook example, bursting with aromas of jasmine, hibiscus, ginger, and white pepper. There is a base of melon and pineapple, but this medium- to full-bodied wine focuses more on floral notes and complexity than on rich fruit, resonating with hints of refreshing spices.” (Wine Advocate 2021)

About the wine:

Made from vines around 70 years old on a south-facing slope (one of Condrieu’s most famous), Niero’s 2019 Condrieu Chéry is a textbook example, bursting with aromas of jasmine, hibiscus, ginger, and white pepper. There is a base of melon and pineapple, but this medium- to full-bodied wine focuses more on floral notes and complexity than on rich fruit, resonating with hints of refreshing spices.

About the estate:

Tucked away on a small cul-de-sac in the heart of the village of Condrieu, Domaine Niero comprises just nine hectares of vineyards: four in Condrieu, two in Côte Rôtie, just over one in Saint-Joseph, and just under one in Crozes-Hermitage. There is also about one hectare dedicated to the Collines Rhodaniennes IGP, planted with both Syrah and Viognier. Although the clean, modern approach is undeniable, the wines are full of character and expressive of their different terroirs.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated Estate (2024 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The wine is full-bodied and rich, with a high degree of ripeness that comes through in a slightly warm finish. Overall, however, it shows great promise.

About the estate:

Since 2004, Rémi has been at the helm of this family-owned estate, which boasts a fine selection of terroirs in Condrieu, with 4 hectares divided into six plots. He also produces several Côte-Rôtie vintages from the Viallière and Bassenon terroirs, as well as a Saint-Joseph vintage, Bois Prieur, and another in Crozes-Hermitage. The wines are serious, rather classic, with aging that sometimes leaves a slight mark on them during their youth.

Review by Mr. PHILIPPE P. Posted on 12/11/2023

In this vintage, Rémi NIERO successfully combines the power of Viognier with a finesse not always found in this appellation. Tasted after four years, it can likely age for another one to two years.
