“Enveloping notes of fresh green herbs and menthol lend an invigorating freshness to the crisp notes of black cherries and raspberries in this blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. It is a full-bodied, expansive wine, yet vibrantly balanced. The finish is marked by a hint of blackcurrant and fine tannins. Drink now through 2027.” (Wine Enthusiast 2020)

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Diane de Puymorin settled in 1998 on a terroir of rounded pebbles and sandstone, at the gateway to the Camargue, on the southern slope of the Costières-de-Nîmes. The family coat of arms, featuring gold and red (gueules in Old French), gave its name to the estate, a 50-hectare vineyard that produces wines with strong character, balancing power and extraction while retaining fine tannins. Vinification takes place in concrete tanks, followed by aging in barrels or tanks depending on the grape variety. The white wines are impressive for their refreshing textures and spontaneity. Among the reds, the Les-Cimels is the most approachable, fruit-forward, yet with a beautiful concentration of substance. Trassegum and La-Bolida are powerful, extract-driven wines, with more ambitious oak aging.

Wine rated (2020 guide) Mentioned (Successful wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan make up this bold Trassegum (“love filter” in Occitan), whose nose offers notes of ripe black fruit, garrigue, tapenade, and menthol. Concentrated, youthful, and structured, with powerful yet refined tannins that generously coat the palate and lovely acidity, this cuvée offers great potential.

About the estate:

The name of this estate, founded in 1998 by Diane de Puymorin, evokes the colors of the family coat of arms, which features gold and red stripes (gules). The vineyard covers 60 hectares cultivated organically, and the transition to biodynamic farming is underway (10 hectares already certified). A unique feature: music therapy is used in the vineyards. One of the top producers in the Costières-de-Nîmes region, which also has the good sense to keep older vintages in stock.

I was very pleasantly surprised. It has plenty of fruitiness and a smoothness that comes with age.
