Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)

About the estate:

Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent created this association of excellence in the early 1990s, becoming one of the best micro-negociants in the Rhône Valley. Today, Bastien and Michel Tardieu scour the vineyards to find the best supplies, usually grapes from very old vines, often located in the historic heart of each appellation. A real change has taken place in recent vintages: large barrels, whole-bunch vinification for certain cuvées and, above all, more measured aging have raised the already excellent standard to a new level. A sure bet in the region.

6*Star rating (Exceptional production)

About the estate:

A wine enthusiast, Michel Tardieu teamed up with Dominique Laurent, the brilliant Burgundy wine merchant and winemaker, to start a small wine trading business about ten years ago. Michel Tardieu is unrivaled in his ability to unearth vintages from old vines in all the Rhône appellations. Add to that Dominique Laurent's expertise in aging wine in magnificent barrels, and you have a dynamic duo that produces the most extraordinary vintages in the Rhône.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

About wine:

The Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes 2021, with its deep purple color, has an alcohol content of 13%. Ripe red fruits, cedar, licorice, and hints of meat are all prominent. Medium-bodied, round, and polished, the 2021 engages the palate with good concentration and lively acidity. The ripe but firm tannins require a few more years in the bottle. It closes with a persistent, savory finish.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 91/100

About wine:

The Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes 2021 is another wine that is well within the vintage, with its medium-bodied, slightly textured but balanced style. Black raspberries, peppery herbs, flowers, and subtle game notes all define this classic 2021, and it is enjoyable to drink now while also having the potential to age for 10 to 12 years.
