“A model of precision and complexity that will delight fans of this vintage”

“An expressive nose of black fruit, roasted meat, smoke, and dried leaves, with baking spices and notes of a crackling fire. It is full-bodied with finely grained tannins. Smooth texture and character. An elegant Hermitage with controlled power at every stage. Precise and concentrated, it nevertheless displays vibrant fruit at its core, with succulent cherries and wild redcurrants that bring freshness and vigor. A superb wine.” (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent founded this prestigious winery in the early 1990s, establishing themselves as one of the top micro-negociants in the Rhône Valley. Today, Bastien and Michel Tardieu travel throughout the vineyards to source the finest grapes, typically from very old vines, often located in the historic heart of each appellation. A real transformation has taken place in recent vintages: large-capacity barrels, whole-cluster vinification for certain cuvées, and above all, more measured aging have raised the already excellent standard to a new level. A sure bet in the region.

6-Star Rated Estate (Exceptional Production)

About the estate:

A wine enthusiast, Michel Tardieu teamed up with Dominique Laurent, the brilliant Burgundian wine merchant and winemaker, to launch a small wine trading business about ten years ago. Michel Tardieu is unmatched in his ability to unearth old-vine cuvées across all the Rhône appellations; add to that Dominique Laurent’s expertise in aging, with his magnificent barrels, and you have a dynamic duo that crafts the most extraordinary cuvées in the Rhône.

Jancis Robinson

Jancis Robinson

Wine rated (2022 guide) 16,5++/20

About the wine:

A powerful nose of licorice—heavier and more full-bodied than that of the Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes. It is then smooth, with a hint of oak. It needs a little time to mellow. Grand and bold, but for now it’s more about the individual elements than a finished wine.

Vinous

Vinous

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

About the wine:

The 2021 Hermitage offers vivid notes of raspberry, red cherry, leafy greens, cedar, and violet. Smooth and round, the 2021 captivates the palate with its rich concentration and juicy fruitiness.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

About the wine:

Exotic cherry and raspberry, along with spring flowers, spices, and notes of fresh herbs, all shine through in Michel Tardieu’s 2021 Hermitage, one of the most concentrated, structured, and textured 2021 vintages in the range. With medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a core of ripe, structured fruit, this beautiful Hermitage will continue to age magnificently for another 10 to 15 years if stored properly.
