Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated (2020 Guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent founded this prestigious winery in the early 1990s, establishing themselves as one of the top micro-negociants in the Rhône Valley. Today, Bastien and Michel Tardieu travel throughout the vineyards to source the finest grapes, typically from very old vines, often located in the historic heart of each appellation. A real transformation has taken place in recent vintages: large-capacity barrels, whole-cluster vinification for certain cuvées, and above all, more measured aging have raised the already excellent standard to a whole new level. A sure bet in the region.

About the estate:

A wine enthusiast, Michel Tardieu teamed up with Dominique Laurent, the brilliant Burgundian wine merchant and winemaker, to start a small wine trading business about ten years ago. Michel Tardieu is unrivaled in his ability to unearth cuvées from old vines across all the Rhône appellations; add to that Dominique Laurent’s expertise in aging, with his magnificent barrels, and you have a dynamic duo that crafts the most extraordinary cuvées in the Rhône.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

About the wine:

The 2021 Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes, with its deep purple color, has an alcohol content of 13%. Ripe red fruits, cedar, licorice, and hints of meat are all prominent. Medium-bodied, round, and polished, the 2021 engages the palate with good concentration and lively acidity. The ripe but firm tannins call for a few more years in the bottle. It closes with a lingering, savory finish.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 91/100

About the wine:

The 2021 Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes is another wine that truly embodies the vintage, with its medium-bodied, slightly textured, yet balanced style. Black raspberries, peppery herbs, flowers, and subtle gamey notes all define this classic 2021, and it’s enjoyable to drink now while still having the potential to age for 10 to 12 years.
