“A top-tier village wine that blends Grenache with Mourvèdre and Syrah. What made it so appealing? The distinguished nose—ripe, certainly, but what stands out most is the elegant interplay of candied fruit, wild strawberries, floral notes, and subtle spices. Then, above all, the palate—paradoxical, at once warm and dynamic, taut and mellow—impresses with its extraordinary volume, its preserved freshness, the finesse of its tannins, and the depth and very licorice-like length of the fruit. A touch of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A wine for aging.” (Le Guide des Vins Hachette 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)
About the estate:
Isabelle Sabon, the sister of Christophe Sabon (La Janasse), purchased the Saint-Antonin estate (15 hectares in Jonquière) in 2014. A combination of a land opportunity and a business strategy, Clos Saint-Antonin offers La Janasse the possibility of a “second” wine. With just under two hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sourced from the La Janasse estate, this new label produced an excellent vintage in 2016, characterized by a rich and precise style.

About the wine:

About the estate:
A regular in the Guide, often highly rated for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, and local wines. A 90-hectare vineyard scattered across multiple plots, managed by Christophe Sabon and his sister Isabelle, children of Aimé Sabon, who founded the estate in 1973. The estate was expanded in 2015 with the purchase of Clos Saint-Antonin and its 15 hectares of vines in the commune of Jonquière.
Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
Wine rated 89/100 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2020 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)
About the wine:
Less ripe and concentrated than the 2017, but silkier and more elegant, the 2018 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu is a similar blend, with about 50% Grenache and the remainder a mix of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Raspberries and cherries emerge on the nose, accompanied by notes of garrigue and black tea, while the full-bodied palate features almost delicate, grippy tannins, with notes of licorice and dark chocolate on the finish.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
This 15-hectare estate, comprising an enclosed vineyard and an old farmhouse in Jonquière, was acquired in late 2014 by the Sabon family, who already owned the Domaine de la Janasse in Courthézon. A winery is scheduled to be built soon.

A bit more lively upon opening a second bottle after nearly two years in the cellar. Full-bodied, very powerful, deep, and with a rich texture that gives the wine great depth. Built on well-integrated, velvety tannins with flavors of candied black fruits and hints of kirsch liqueur. It’s a shame that the alcohol content, a bit too high for my taste, still masks the otherwise very rich aromatics somewhat. A lingering finish, supported by notes of licorice, pepper, and chocolate. At the same price point, it doesn’t hold up to a comparison with “Terre d’argile” from La Janasse (also SABON), which strikes me as more refined and, above all, much smoother. Overpriced for a Plan de Dieu. Rating of 3.8 revised upward. A spicy dish—such as piri-piri chicken in this case—paired wonderfully with it.

An alcohol content that is too high, which prevents one from appreciating the wine's aromas.
