Bettane & Desseauve
Winery rated 1*Star (A high-quality, recommended production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
In the heart of the Ardèche, Benoît Chazallon and his wife Florence cultivate forty hectares of organically farmed vineyards. The estate features a wide range of grape varieties, all vinified using native yeasts, to produce several cuvées that are bottled unfiltered. We particularly enjoyed the wines from the Les Confidentielles range (Florence, L’Audacieuse, and Madame de), made exclusively from southern grape varieties.

About the estate:
The medieval castle of La Selve began as a fortified house in the 13th century, then served as a hunting lodge for the Duke of Joyeuse, before becoming a wine estate (40 ha today, certified organic). Benoît Chazallon has been at the helm since 2002, taking over from his parents.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Selected Estates (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
At their vineyard in the Vivarais region—which they have completely renovated themselves and which surrounds their family’s 13th-century fortified castle—Florence and Benoît Chazallon are passionately dedicated to producing French wines that proudly represent the Ardèche hillsides. The range is divided into two categories: “Les Classiques,” which are approachable and fruit-forward, and “Les Confidentielles,” more ambitious and complex red cuvées. *La Revue du vin de France* named Château de la Selve its “Discovery of the Year” for 2012.
