“A true northern-latitude Syrah with genuine fruitiness, classic in its nuances of ash, spices, and a hint of bacon. The terroir comes through perfectly. On the palate, it is full-bodied but not overly powerful; the tannic structure provides a lovely vitality and a refreshing finish. ” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2021 - RVF) A St-Joseph that truly reflects its terroir.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The Gripa family arrived in Saint-Péray in the 17th century and settled in Mauves around 1850. A trusted name in the northern Rhône Valley, renowned for both its Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph wines (as evidenced by the numerous Favorites in both appellations), the estate has been led since 2001 by Fabrice Gripa, son of Bernard, who now oversees 18 hectares of vineyards.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

A true northern-latitude Syrah with genuine fruitiness, classic in its nuances of ash, spices, and a hint of bacon. The terroir comes through perfectly. On the palate, it is full-bodied but not overly powerful; the tannic structure lends a lovely vitality and a refreshing finish.

About the estate:

Fabrice Gripa carries on his father’s legacy at the sole Mauves estate, which produces as many white wines as reds. He has a perfect command of his craft, producing a range of cuvées with distinct personalities. The whites stand out in four cuvées: two Saint-Péray and two Saint-Joseph. The reds, meanwhile, are fruit-forward, with a sense of integrity and admirable aging management. A consistent estate producing wines of very high quality.

Review by Mr. MATHIEU W. Published on June 1, 2020

Medium-deep to deep ruby color with a purple core. On the nose, dark and red fruit with a distinct peppery note, along with vegetal and floral tones. On the palate, deliciously ripe and sweet red and dark fruit, primarily plums and black currants. Plenty of spice and, from the mid-palate onward, a touch of heat. Delightful freshness throughout. Silky-smooth tannins. Good body and power, yet very elegant (even despite the 14.5% ABV). Perfect balance. An exciting hint of bitterness on the finish. A lovely, long finish. Delicious now in its youth, but will definitely improve in about 4 to 5 years. Will age well until at least 2030. A top-tier Saint-Joseph. Finesse, character, and substance. An absolute must-have in your cellar!!! Score: 18+/20
