"Looking for a Saint-Joseph to cellar? We've found just the Gem you need!"

“Well-balanced oak, with enough fresh, juicy dark fruit underneath to hold its own, but give it time as the barrel aging is generous. Smooth, sweet, and luxurious, with fruit notes like plum and blackberry, without excessive alcohol—just a sense of richness. A successful wine in an oaky style.” (Decanter 2023)

Rated estate (2024 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Jérôme Coursodon heads one of the renowned estates in Mauves. The Saint-Joseph wines from this part of the appellation (Mauves-Tournon) differ from those further north, around Sarras, even though all are produced on granite soils. The estate’s reds are often more fully developed than the whites.

About the wine:

Well-balanced oak, with enough fresh, juicy dark fruit to balance it out, but give it time to breathe, as the barrel aging is quite pronounced. Smooth, sweet, and luxurious, with fruit notes like plum and blackberry, without excessive alcohol—just a sense of richness. A successful wine in an oaky style.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

Established for four generations in Mauves, the birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation, Pierre Coursodon, the father, and Jérôme, the son—who took over in 1999—manage 17 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to Saint-Joseph, primarily the red variety. For many years, the wines from this estate have been featured in the Guide’s selections: with rare consistency, they are regular recipients of stars and Favorites designations.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

The Coursodon family has been in the wine business since the late 19th century. The estate owns vineyards in the renowned regions of Mauves, Tournon, Saint-Jean-de-Muzol, and Glun. The whites display a lovely character, without excessive oak. As for the reds, L'Olivaie comes from the heart of Sainte-Épine, in the village of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. However, the most recent vintages struck us as overly assertive, with very pronounced oak notes. The result is wines that are not always easy to drink. We regretfully have to remove one star from the estate’s rating.

Rated winery (2023 guide) Recommended

About the wine:

Aroma of grilled meat and cola. A powerful, dense mid-palate with spices, cured meats, and subtle oak that is prominent at this stage. Plenty of fruit to balance the oak over time, along with fine, well-integrated tannins. Structured and balanced, it should age very nicely.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 91-93/100

About the wine:

The 2022 vintage is very oaky. This comes as no surprise, given that it was aged in new 228-liter French oak barrels. Pronounced wood smoke and cedar notes blend with licorice, fruitcake, black cherry compote, and blackberry. Looking for power and intensity? Look no further.

About the wine:

The 2022 Saint Joseph La Sensonne still has a slightly more modern style and was aged in new barrels, but I never felt that it lost its classic character. It offers aromas of blackcurrant and darker red berries that give way to magnificent notes of graphite, burnt earth, violet, and spicy wood. This beauty is medium-bodied to full-bodied, with the minerality typical of Saint-Josephs, fine yet well-structured tannins, and a very lovely finish. It’s a wine worth discovering.
