Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Brother of the famous Jo Pithon, a leading figure in the Layon hillsides in the 1990s, Olivier Pithon fell in love with the terroirs of Calce, where his adventure began in 2001. A fervent biodynamicist, he imbues his vintages with a distinct identity, producing wines that are delicious and easy to enjoy.

Wine rating (2025 guide) 89/100 (2023 vintage)

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

This is the story of a winemaker from Anjou, who passed through Bordeaux and fell in love with the village of Calce in 2000. In 2001, Olivier Pithon found some 7 hectares in the area and immediately bought his first biodynamic cultivator to apply biodynamic practices. The estate was certified in 2010. Today, it covers a total of 22 hectares in three areas with distinct geologies (schist, marl, and clay-limestone). The winery, built outside the village, also allows the winemaker to vinify his small business with grapes from quality winegrowers who share his philosophy. All the wines are charming, with a very delicate mouthfeel and energy. Always joyful, expressive, and juicy, these cuvées develop extra body and tension in the wines for aging. A benchmark estate.

Note and opinion by Mr. VINCENT V. Published on 12/19/2025

I fear, but hope, that it is actually a defective bottle, with a horrible smell of excrement and a sparkling taste in the mouth. "Organic wine" is not without risk...
