“This Clos Malbec, which has not been aged in oak, is a wine full of smoothness and subtlety. It opens with red fruit (redcurrant) accented by spices. The palate is remarkable for its roundness, body, and smooth finish, marked by a pleasant return of ripe fruit. A delicious Cahors to be enjoyed young. ” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2018)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
Jean-Luc Baldès continues the family legacy of this historic estate in Cahors. A large portion of the 65 hectares lies on the third terraces of Vire, along the banks of the Lot River. The remainder is situated on the Causse plateau and its whiter soils. While the thoughtful plot selection reflects the estate’s heritage, the Prince-Probus blend offers a true representation of modern Cahors—vibrant and juicy. A must-visit destination.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Cité
About the estate:
Jean-Luc Baldès was a champion of Cahors Malbec, striving to bring out the full potential of his vineyard, located on the second, third, and fourth terraces of the Lot River. As the guardian of the vineyard’s history, the “black wine” and the Probus cuvée once brought fame to Cahors. Today, the estate is focusing on wine tourism and attempting to produce more modern cuvées, without really succeeding. We are therefore removing the star this year.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 90/100
Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Wine Enthusiast)
About the wine:
Although it is a 100% Malbec, this wine emphasizes richness over structure. The tannins are ripe, and the black fruit is warm. The wine highlights the grape’s natural fruitiness.

A bit disappointing at first, but after a good two hours, it rounds out. Not exceptional, but a good table wine.

Review by Mr. PIERRE K. Published on July 16, 2018
On the nose, red fruits like morello cherry and raspberry are perfectly balanced with mild spices, creating a harmonious whole. The palate is incredibly round (yet full of character), accompanying us from the attack to the finish The flavors of mild spices and red fruits “battle” on the palate without either overpowering the other, accompanying us from start to finish—a finish that is moderately long but very pleasant. This wine lacks great complexity but is approachable and indulgent. It will pair perfectly with grilled meats or a summer barbecue!

I'm a little disappointed; I was expecting more finesse and complexity.

It doesn't have much depth, but it's a very pleasant wine for lightly spiced summer dishes. It's ready to drink now; I don't see much point in letting it age.
