“This vintage, a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, unfolds with powerful and complex aromas of dark fruits (blackcurrant, prune) and spices. On the palate, it is supported by firm yet gentle tannins and well-balanced acidity. A fine wine with aging potential. ” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2016). A complex Madiran with a very long finish that will delight wine lovers!

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2016) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

About the wine:

Alain Brumont acquired this château in 1979 and completely replanted it on slopes of rounded pebbles, over a subsoil of yellow and red clay. It has become an icon of the appellation, with several "Coup de Coeur" awards to its credit. This vintage, a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, unfolds with powerful and complex aromas of dark fruits (blackcurrant, prune) and spices. On the palate, it is supported by firm yet gentle tannins and well-balanced acidity. A fine wine for aging.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated (2016 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good)

About the wine:

This is the estate’s signature wine. It currently retains the influence of its elegant aging in new oak. Nevertheless, one can detect beautiful fruit, refined tannins, and a magnificent, spicy finish.

Wine rated 14.5/20 (Good wine)

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages reflect his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, which vary in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

When I first tasted this vintage, it struck me as being just a tad harsh. Since I still have some 2010 left, I’ll wait to try the 2012 again.

Overpowered by alcohol, which masks the careful winemaking that we used to appreciate a few years ago. What a shame...

Let it age before drinking. The tannins are very pronounced and haven't softened yet. But it shows great promise in 3 to 5 years.
