“Montus’s spectacular hillside vineyard, overlooking the Adour Valley, produces some of the finest Madirans. This wine, made from 80% Tannat, showcases the grape’s quality and intensity. It is still full of tannins, but the fruit really shines through. Give this wine some time and drink it starting in 2023. ” (Wine Enthusiast 2020). Dubbed the “Petrus of the Southwest” by numerous critics around the world, Château Montus’s Madiran checks all the boxes of a great terroir wine!

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated 93/100
Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the wine:
A great wine for aging.
About the estate:
Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran out into the world under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

Very good and consistent in quality, but far too young at this stage. Best enjoyed after 8–10 years.

Tasted on 2/27/22: a sure bet from the Southwest, a wine with aging potential that has remained very affordable—unlike Bordeaux wines—and never disappoints!
