“This is the latest vintage from this flagship Madiran estate, situated in steep vineyards surrounding a grand château. The wine is dark, firm, and full of tannins, yet it leaves room for hints of black fruit and a bold structure. It is still maturing. ” (Wine Enthusiast 2018) Dubbed the “Petrus of the Southwest” by numerous critics around the world, Château Montus’s Madiran checks all the boxes for a great terroir wine!

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran out into the world under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
