Guide Hachette des vins
Wine noted (guide 2017) 1*Star (Very successful wine)
About the wine:
The Prestige cuvée is made from 100% Tannat grown on the estate’s highest and warmest south-facing plots. It is aged for an extended period in new oak (84 months for this 2012 vintage). The color is deep: a “black wine.” The developed and generous nose harmoniously blends ripe fruit with woody notes and hints of roasted coffee. On the palate, a beautiful texture confirms the fruit’s ripeness and the quality of the aging. The wine is full-bodied, structured, smooth, and long, built on velvety, silky tannins. Despite its age, this vintage still holds considerable potential.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages reflect his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, which vary in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
