Rating: Bettane & Desseauve 17/20, Guide Hachette 2** (Remarkable Wine)
“Remarkable smoothness, perfectly integrated oak, immense proportions—the great modern and universal Madiran, without compromising its origins. ” (The Bettane & Desseauve Guide to French Wines 2014
A cuvée that remains intensely complex, with notes of ripe fruit and lovely oak. A full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful Madiran, beautifully balanced. The tannins are infinitely refined, and the finish is long and intense. A great companion at the table!

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

A good wine, though my first taste of Madiran was a bit of a letdown. Was it opened too young? In the Southwest, Cahors wines suit my taste better.

Undoubtedly a safe bet. A precise and well-balanced wine.

Still closed and austere, with overly pronounced tannins. The power and aromas are there, but they border on over-extraction.
