“A fine, aromatic structure, with fruity and chocolatey notes, a polished and distinguished character, and extreme delicacy. ” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2004 - Gault Millau). Here, Alain Brumont has successfully tamed the Tannat grape and given it an expression previously unimagined. A beautifully crafted 2001, at the height of its maturity!

Wine rated 19/20 (Exceptional wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

Exceptional! Enjoy it now after decanting, and it will still be great in a few years.

Exceptional—perfect with game in sauce or any kind of stew...and what a bargain compared to an equivalent product made elsewhere.
