Richer and more expansive... ” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France - RVF). “Warm, complex, with a very long finish, incredibly tempting body—a beautiful, grand wine.” (Le Grand Guide des Vins de France - Bettane & Desseauve)

Wine rated (2012 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The 2009 Montus is still very young, full-bodied, and rich, built around a vigorous and dense wine.

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

Very disappointing... a far cry from the early Montus albums...

Montus is always a delight (especially with duck breast). But the 2009 vintage doesn't measure up to the 2005.

The 2009 Montus lives up to its reputation as an iconic Madiran—powerful and aromatic (though it’s best to let it age a bit)—with a deep color and a pleasant nose, and excellent aging potential.
