“This wine is in excellent condition. Tannins and secondary aromas dominate this mature wine with a leathery texture. The fruit is also present: dried red berries and notes of black plum skin. It is a major wine ready to drink, with both ripe aromas and well-balanced fruit.” (Wine Enthusiast 2017)

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated 16.5/20 (Very good)

About the wine:

Still lively, this vintage combines rich fruitiness with subtle tertiary notes. Blackberry and blackcurrant mingle with hints of forest floor and mushrooms. The whole is framed by a mineral character and surprising freshness, with a structure that remains taut.

Wine rated (2018 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

Leather, dense, woody, woody, cocoa; clean attack, full-bodied, dense and powerful, woody, intense, leather, leathery tar, spicy, roasted finish.

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages reflect his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, which vary in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with brick-red hues. Nose: Powerful aromas of leather, tobacco, and black fruit, with distinct oak notes. Palate: Rich and powerful, with notes of black fruit and spices. The wine still has aging potential.

Review by Mr. SEBASTIEN G. Posted on January 2, 2019

This wine is 19 years old. It’s past its prime. There’s still a bit of tannin, but the fruit has completely disappeared. It would have been better to release it sooner. So, a big disappointment (especially at €43 a bottle...).
