Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)
About the estate:
Maxime Barmès and his sister Sophie are now in charge of the estate, with their mother Geneviève still present. The vineyard covers almost 19 hectares and has been cultivated for over a decade according to biodynamic principles, with increasingly advanced practices (sheep and beehives in some vineyards, tree planting, etc.). With each passing vintage, the wines seem to gain in tension and dryness, which is something we can only rejoice in. The estate's greatest successes are undoubtedly its Pinot Noirs and Rieslings, year after year. The estate has just released a 2009 Pinot Noir from old vines, grown in the Hengst grand cru but not yet eligible for that designation, a wine that was vinified by François Barmès two years before his tragic accident.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Founded in 1985 by Geneviève Buecher and François Barmès, both heirs to families of winegrowers and owners dating back to the 17th century, this estate is located 5 km southwest of Colmar. Run biodynamically since 1998 (certified in 2001), it now has seven terroirs, including three grands crus. After the death of their father in 2011, the founding couple's two children, Sophie and Maxime (in the cellar), joined the business.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated 93/100 (2018 vintage)
Rated estate (2021 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
Maxime Barmès, supported on the estate by his mother Geneviève and his sister Sophie, confirms and continues the work begun nearly thirty years ago to maintain the highest quality wines. Rigorous biodynamic work in the vineyard and careful monitoring in the cellar make this estate one of the most serious in the region. The latest vintages are exemplary: the wines have gained in precision and the grands crus belong to the select circle of great wines, with exceptional air resistance, capable of improving over several days.
