Léon Boesch - Alsace Grand Cru Gewurztraminer Zinnkoepflé 2019
92/100

“A distinguished wine with great potential”
“The Gewurztraminer is easily tamed by the power of the Zinnkoepflé terroir: a wine that is still young, with plenty of potential.” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2022 - RVF). This prestigious terroir takes its name, “Tête au Soleil” (Head to the Sun), from its south-facing exposure. The vines thrive here at altitudes of up to 430 meters on a shell limestone terroir. Gewurztraminer reigns supreme on this steep hillside, producing a majestic wine with oriental notes of spices, star anise, and subtly minty pepper. On the palate, it combines power, finesse, and length.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
After returning to the estate in 1999, Matthieu Boesch was quick to make the switch to organic and biodynamic farming, earning certification as early as 2006. However, while these sustainable practices are one thing, it took more time for the wines to find their balance in the glass—for the added acidity and structure to develop depth and complexity. For the past two vintages, we’ve found that this is now the case. Good news!

About the wine:
The Gewurztraminer is easily tamed by the power of the Zinnkoepflé terroir: a wine that is still young, with plenty of potential.
About the estate:
As ardent advocates of biodynamics for over a decade, Matthieu and his wife Marie represent the eleventh generation of the Léon Boesch estate, located in the heart of the Vallée Noble. Here, the Zinnkoepflé grand cru is now dedicated exclusively to Gewürztraminer, with the aim of establishing it as a benchmark for a dry, full-bodied style. The estate has been practicing biodynamic agriculture since 2000, and the winery inaugurated in Westhalten in 2010 is a bioclimatic model. The wines possess depth and best express the terroirs of the region.
