Coonawarra
Coonawarra, which means "honeysuckle" in Aboriginal language, is recognized as one of Australia's highest quality wine regions, but also one of its oldest. The first vines were planted in 1890, with the first vintage produced in 1895.
Today, the Coonawarra vineyard covers 5,603 hectares, representing 7% of South Australia's vineyards.
The Coonawarra region has a unique terroir that is particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon: Terra Rossa, a red soil composed of wind-blown clay and nutrients. The climate is cool, with temperatures around 54°F in winter and 66°F in summer, with cold nights and a long ripening season for the grapes.
