Château Coutet
Built in the 13th century, this English fortress became a wine estate in 1643. Once owned by the Lur-Saluces family, it housed the stables of Château d’Yquem, which have since been converted into a wine cellar. Vertical wine presses dating from the 1920s, a 14th-century chapel, and the cobblestone courtyard give Château Coutet its distinctive character.
In 1787, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, then U.S. Ambassador to France, singled out Château Coutet as “the best Sauternes of Barsac.” Recognized for its excellence, Château Coutet’s wine was designated a “Premier Grand Cru” in the 1855 classification.
Château Coutet combines elegance and quality to produce a magnificent Sauternes under the direction of the Baly family, with technical and commercial support from “Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A.”
The Château Coutet vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir. The vines’ deep roots draw nutrients from the limestone and clay soil, giving the grapes their richness and strength.
The wine bears the name “Coutet,” derived from the Gascon word “couteau,” which evokes sharpness and liveliness, freshness and vibrancy—a unique style.
In its youth, it is full of generous aromas of white flowers, citrus, honey, and vanilla.
With age, it develops deeper, warmer notes combining exotic spices and candied fruit.
Aging accentuates the harmony of its botrytised character and gives the wine a delicate bouquet.
