Wine rated (2021 guide) 91-92/100

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Pierre Lurton, who is also director of Château Cheval Blanc and president of Château d’Yquem, purchased Château Marjosse more than twenty years ago, drawn by the old vines and the quality of the terroir: a rarity in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, the asterian limestone—the same type that has made Saint-Émilion famous—lies just below the surface here. The quality and consistency of this wine, both white and red, are astonishing. The wines are remarkably balanced and pure. They feature vibrant fruit, a silky and harmonious texture, and are highly drinkable while demonstrating excellent aging potential.

At his family estate, Lurton builds on his success with this magnificent 2020 vintage, which beautifully showcases the elegance and depth of Bordeaux. It flatters the palate with its full-bodied, fleshy, and fresh character, featuring the enveloping sweetness of stewed blueberries, blackberries, and black cherries, accented by subtle notes of licorice and cocoa, all framed by refined, melting tannins with a velvety texture. The finish is equally voluptuous and refreshing. At this price, it’s a real gem that leaves you dreaming! With its full-bodied profile—more powerful than in previous years—this fine bottle, when mature, perfectly complemented a Limousine ribeye with Béarnaise sauce. Rating = 4.5.
