Wine rated (2023 guide) 92-93/100
Rated estate (2022 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the wine:
This wine features some of the freshest tannins in the appellation, with a refined character and a lingering finish marked by peppery floral notes.
About the estate:
Thierry Valette has always had a passion for wine; his great-grandfather owned Châteaux Pavie and Troplong-Mondot, two of Saint-Émilion’s most prestigious classified growths. In 2000, he took over this 13-hectare estate in Belvès-de-Castillon (20 kilometers east of Libourne), committing to the rigorous standards of biodynamics. Asterian limestone is predominant at Puy Arnaud. In the late 19th century, the fifteen hectares of the Clos were actually classified as a “Premier Cru” of Saint-Émilion! These soils impart great finesse, freshness, and minerality to the grapes, allowing the bouquet to rival that of the “great terroirs” (floral, spices, truffle) as it gradually unfolds. The range stands out for its consistency and coherence: the Pervenche cuvée, with moderate aging potential, is best enjoyed within 5 years for the liveliness of its fruit. Les-Ormeaux releases a delicately textured wine, paired with exemplary fruitiness in its rich, balanced profile. Velvety in texture and predominantly Merlot, this grand vin is highly refined in its tannic length, with well-defined fruit and a stylish, refreshing finish. This is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished vintages on the Right Bank. In a blind tasting, this wine will surprise many, as it can rival even the most prestigious wines. It is one of the most original wines of the Bordeaux region!

Wine rated (2025 guide) 92/100 (An outstanding wine)
About the wine:
Compared to the 2021 vintage, Clos Puy Arnaud 2022 (a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) is less reserved and austere, offering aromas of black fruit, spices, blackberry, and flowers. Medium-bodied, generously extracted, and concentrated, it is deep, lively, and structured, with velvety tannins, and finishes with a long, delicately spicy, and fresh aftertaste. This estate is moving toward more refined and vibrant wines, but this one will benefit from aging in the cellar to fully blossom. 2027–2035

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the estate:
Thierry Valette has owned this estate in Castillon since 2000. Crafted with care, the wine established itself from the outset as one of the appellation’s most intriguing wines, with a deep and eminently distinguished style. The vineyard, now cultivated using biodynamic methods, is living up to all expectations. In addition to the first wine, Thierry Valette offers two so-called “everyday” cuvées (Bistrot and Rouge) that reconcile us with Bordeaux wines meant for immediate enjoyment. It is worth noting the consistency of the range and the commitment to producing both wines for immediate pleasure and wines of great depth.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100
About the wine:
Clos Puy Arnaud 2022 is a dense and exuberant wine. The notes of intense black fruit, licorice, menthol, and clove are pronounced. Clos Puy Arnaud is usually more refined, but in 2022, the vintage takes center stage and expresses itself with force. Nevertheless, it is a seductive wine. I look forward to tasting it after it has aged in the bottle. 2027–2042
