"A Crus Bourgeois recommended by critics!"

"This rich, velvety wine issophisticated and bursting with black fruit. A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend, it is grown on deep gravel soils in the southern Médoc. Rich and full-bodied, with a hint of mint from its time in oak, the wine should be ready to drink starting in 2023." (Wine Enthusiast 2019)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 1*Star (A high-quality, recommended production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Martine Cazeneuve, who already owned property in the Côtes de Blaye, took over this estate on the left bank in 1989. She worked tirelessly to restore it to its former glory, replanting the vineyards and renovating the buildings. She also owns a Margaux estate, Château La Bessane, and a Moulis estate, Château La Garricq. She has just handed over management of the estate to her son, Pierre. Today, Paloumey—currently in the process of converting to organic farming—has rediscovered the classic Médoc spirit that made it so successful.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2019 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

A lovely sandy-gravelly terroir nestled between the classified growths La Lagune and Cantemerle. The estate enjoyed its heyday in the 19th century, before falling into decline following the phylloxera crisis and being revived in the 20th century. The story would be unremarkable were it not for the woman at the heart of its revival—a woman who, moreover, is a winemaker in the Blaye region. Martine Cazeneuve crossed the estuary in 1990 to acquire this estate, which had lost both its vineyards and its winery. Joined in 2014 by her son Pierre, the winemaker now manages 34 hectares, currently in the process of converting to organic farming.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 90/100 (Very good wine)

About the wine:

A refined, mature style, with flavors of plum purée and blackberry, complemented by notes of vanilla and burnt tobacco and underpinned by a solid graphite-driven development. Best enjoyed through 2029.

Yves Beck

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2018 guide) 91/100

About the wine:

Medium garnet red. A pleasantly fresh bouquet. Notes of licorice, blackberries, and blackcurrants. A delicious, fruity attack. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a creamy touch that lends it density. The structure enhances the freshness and perfectly supports the fruit. The finish still needs to gain some suppleness, but the wine as a whole is already very exciting. We’re not far off from 92/100. 2022–2034

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2019 guide) 92/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is aromatic, well-structured, and offers a delicate concentration. It reveals notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, and, more subtly, wild strawberry and wild raspberry, combined with subtle hints of blueberry and violet, as well as discreet touches of licorice and caramelization. The palate is fruity, balanced, and well-defined, with a subtle mineral backbone, a delicate juiciness, freshness, and a lovely finesse of texture. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy, fleshy blackberry and fleshy raspberry, along with more subtle hints of small, fleshy berries, combined with subtle hints of flowers and licorice, as well as discreet hints of chocolate (in the background) and caramelization. Good length.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on May 31, 2023

In contrast to “Plume,” which is built around raw fruit, the Cru Bourgeois is at its best in this balanced, fresh, and highly concentrated 2016 vintage. As it begins to open up, the prominent fruit, smoky notes, harmonious oak, and tannins—already well-integrated and rounded—lend a subtle smoothness to the fine, velvety texture. The palate continues in the same vein with a touch of acidity that highlights the depth and persistence of the finish. Decant before serving. The well-structured wine allows you to enjoy this 2016 without having to wait too long, paired with grilled duck breast from the Southwest and a few handfuls of mitraille sautéed in their own fat. Rating = 4.
